One concept that has been rolling around in my brain the last week as I seek to better establish my business is what both CF. Haanel and Napoleon Hill termed ‘Money Consciousness’.

How does this statement regarding the topic that Hill made in chapter 2 of ‘Think and Grow Rich’ hit you?

“Only those who become “money conscious” ever accumulate great riches. “Money consciousness” means that
the mind has become so thoroughly saturated with the DESIRE for money, that one can see one’s self already
in possession of it.”(Napoleon Hill

For me, when I first read those words over 20 years ago it was like a hard slap in the face! You see I had been brought up in a Fundamental Christian home where seeking for Money or worldly goods was considered a taboo. You may have heard phrases such as ‘The Love of Money is the root of all  evil’  or even ‘Money is the root of all evil’. I believe in the last few years as I have moved forward with my own Home Based Business opportunities, that though I had professed to have given up the idea that ‘Money seeking’ was evil, subtly in the back round this untruth still held me back from reaching my full potential to be the ‘Gift’ God had intended me to be for people.

Lately as I have sought to move my business forward in new ways  I have come to the realization or ‘Consciousness’ that I need MONEY! I need money to share my gifts and talents with others, I need money to be free to be the man God desires me to be and I need Money to provide the best service I can for others. Read further what CF. Haanel said about ‘Money Consciousness’

“The money consciousness is an attitude of mind. It is the open door to
the arteries of commerce. It is the receptive attitude. Desire is the
attractive force which sets the current in motion …”(CF. Haanel)

Accumulating or Having Money then is all about an attitude of openness and receptivity and DESIRE is the Key ingredient to attract the resources one may need. So when we the have a positive attitude and an intense Desire for Money we can then be aware or ‘conscious of’ the  ‘the arteries of commerce ‘ or  many opportunities available to us today.

Let me leave with you today my new ’5 Step Action Plan’ for having a better ‘Money Consciousness’

1.) Give Yourself Permission

permission color 300x286 "Five Steps To Better Money Consciousness"

“All possession is the result of the accumulative attitude of mind, or the
money consciousness; this is the magic wand which will enable you to
receive the idea and it will formulate plans for you to execute, and you
will find as much pleasure in the execution as in the satisfaction of
attainment and achievement.”(CF Haanel)”

In other words step forward and decide that Money is needed and you are worthy to have all the Money you need to live a Fulfilling and meaningful life. Another book that I browsed when pondering this was ‘The Science of Getting Rich’ by Wallace Wattles. In chapter 2 of his book he is as direct about accumulation of Wealth as one could be. He basically says it Is our RIGHT & if we are to be all that the Infinite Creator intended us to be we will need to be wealthy.

2.) Decide to ‘Cast off the Poverty Consciousness’

native american poverty 300x193 "Five Steps To Better Money Consciousness"

“Fear is just the opposite from money consciousness. It is poverty
consciousness, and as the law is unchangeable we get exactly what we
give; if we fear we get what we feared. “(Napoleon Hill)

Hill said basically to not have a consciousness of Money was FEAR or Poverty Consciousness.

There is so much I could say about this point as I think all people can relate to being afraid in their lives. Certain fears such as fearing for your life on a battlefield may be healthy, and yet in my mind we entertain and nurture way too many unwarranted fears in life.Fear or Poverty consciousness keeps us thinking small in business, or not trying new methods and approaches to improve business. From the Bible a Parable that illustrates these contrasting concepts so well is  about the TALENTS that a master gave to his servants before he left for a trip. The 1st servant was given 5 talents, the 2nd servant was given 2 talents and the 3rd servant was given one Talent. All the servants were expected to multiply their talents and become more prosperous. When the Master returned he found the 1st 2 servants had doubled their talents and so he rewarded them with more wealth and responsibility. However, the 3rd servant HID his Talent FEARING he might lose it. The Master called this servant unworthy and actually wicked. The moral of the story for us in life and business is just this, if we are not moving forward we will fall behind and actually lose anything we already have. We can not allow fear or Poverty Consciousness to hold us back!

3.) Decide to See and Experience the Possibilities

cc "Five Steps To Better Money Consciousness" photo credit: Zest-pk

In chapter 2 (‘Desire’ ) of  ‘Think and Grow Rich’ Hill speaks about a time much like ours today when there was the great depression….

“The six year economic collapse has reduced all men, substantially, to the same level. A new race is about to
be run. The stakes represent huge fortunes which will be accumulated within the next ten years. The rules of
the race have changed, because we now live in a CHANGED WORLD that definitely favors the masses, those
who had but little or no opportunity to win under the conditions existing during the depression, when fear
paralyzed growth and development.
We who are in this race for riches, should be encouraged to know that this changed world in which we live is
demanding new ideas, new ways of doing things, new leaders, new inventions, new methods of teaching, new
methods of marketing, new books, new literature, new features for the radio, new ideas for moving pictures.
Back of all this demand for new and better things, there is one quality which one must possess to win, and that
is DEFINITENESS OF PURPOSE, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning DESIRE to possess it.”

As the Chinese say about crisis,,,The same word wei-chi can mean both danger or opportunity. So the question is How are you viewing our current time, as an opportunity to attain better ‘Money Consciousness’ and increase your position in life, or are you holding back in fear and just seeing the negative? The choice is up to each of us.

4.) Do It For LOVE!

cc "Five Steps To Better Money Consciousness" photo credit: MAGIC CHARM GRAFIX

This above point may be the biggest idea that turned things around for me in regard to ‘Money Seeking or Consciousness’. Having a lot of Money just to have Money and myriads of expensive toys just would not do it for me(though I am by no means saying that I would not enjoy some of these things). For me it is ALL about what I can trade for that Money. I connect Money to changing the world!! For me $100.00 would feed a whole village of 300 families in India so 1 Million dollars would feed 300,000 families!!! I connect Money as a Value to other values I have such as my Mission Foundation to help establish and Train Missionaries. If you have problems with the DESIRE for Money connect this to a cause you are passionate about.

5.) Be of Service to Others!

servant leadership 150x150 "Five Steps To Better Money Consciousness"

“We make money by making friends, and we enlarge our circle of friends
by making money for them, by helping them, by being of service to
them. The first law of success then is service, and this in turn is built on
integrity and justice.” (CF. Haanel)

As I say many times on this blog when I find and share an impacting statement, WOW!!! Haanel said it all, SERVICE to others is the Key to becoming more prosperous  and making more money. The Bible said it this way ‘The servant (Minister) is worthy of his Hire, or to be PAID!!’ IF you in your business are providing  service to others that is noble and worthy you DESERVE to be Paid! This is a fact of business and Commerce. So Go forth and ASK!!

So there you have it folks! settle the issue to day, Have More Money Consciousness so you can make the world a better place!

Napoleon Hill said it well and it is until today proven to be a great success formula. Being money conscious and having that burning desire on what you seek for is an indicator that you are in the path to success. It is about creating and working much more rather than simply having enough. Great article Matt! :)

I really like your point #5. Give back or being at service to another is such an important fundamental concept that many tend to overlook today. People seem to always want the easy way to make money that requires no effort or work on their part. The reality is that if you are not provide value to someone else, how in the world do you expcet to get it back???

Your points on losing the poverty mindset are also really important steps to moving towards, aquiring money and using it for a tool to better yourself. This is a great article!

Thanks Matt, that’s really a great post!
I’ve always thought that making a lot of money certainly leads to temptations and greed. From a moral point of view, there’s nothing wrong with making money unless you become obsessed with them. Getting rich is the bigger test for a person’s character… you see so many people changing their circle of friends, their atttitude… I think it’s ok to want to live a better life but you also should not forget that there are so many people who don’t even have water to drink.
If you do everything with love, you will never fall into any trap!

Matt accumulating money is definitely about have a prosperity consciousness. Having a poverty consciousness is not something to be praised and neither does it make one a better person. There is praise for you coming to the realization or ‘Consciousness’ that you need MONEY! You need money to share your gifts and talents with others, You need money to be free to be the man God desires you to be and you need Money to provide the best service you can for others. Prosperity consciousness needs to be taught to everyone. Thanks for this excellent post.

Hi Matt. I really enjoyed reading this post. My husband and I have learned to lived without a lot of money – voluntary simplicity, they call it. Sometimes I get put off by all the money-money-money talk on the internet and TV. However, I have had a couple of bad years at my music studio, and I have noticed that one thing I have really missed is having money to give away to church, charities, or other causes I believe in. We’re on the way up financially now, and I look forward to being able to do a little more. I hadn’t thought about money in quite the way you outlined it. Thanks for writing this blog.

I have to say that I am tired of all the money talk. It may be necessary in order to get rich, but I could not care less. It will not make me any happier than I am right now. I have never understood how money can be the driver for anything. I understand that we all need money to survive, but what you are talking about is different. It sounds like making money the driver for everything. I know that you mean well, but still. Why not talk about the things you would love to do, and take care of your financial needs to achieve those goals in silence? I am sorry, this is not a personal attack on you or even your post, just a growing frustration with a lot of posts lately.

    Hello Karin:

I believe I can understand how you feel, I have been there myself. I think for some of those things I love to do…as I stated feed the Hungry in India, Start a Missions Foundation and other related projects. It WILL take a lot of Money to do those things & accomplish measurable goals in those areas, Will that mean I become wealthy?…I don’t know, What one defines as Riches & Wealth to another is not Riches.

I appreciate your thoughts as well, and I also know $$$ in & of itself will not bring me Happiness & yet again as I stated Money is necessary & in my opinion one must Have some focus on the AMOUNT needed or that money will never be Made & the goals desired will never be reached. As for keeping silent about money I see what you are saying & yet for me to speak it forth helps my resolve to attain it.

I do not take offense at what you say at all, we are all different, in fact I appreciate your views. I am sorry if I may have offended you or my thoughts seem greedy as that was never my intention.I think at times we just need to agree to disagree & not take it personal, and this may be such a time.

    Thanks for your thoughts Karin

    Hey Matt,

A very interesting post, as always…thanks for sharing.

As is the case quite often, money can stir up a lot of emotion.
I certainly strive for financial security and that can be very subjective, as everyone has their own definition and people need different levels of income to feel secure.

In order to achieve any goal, whether it is financial, spiritual, emotional, etc..we have to have a strong, focused and positive mindset to manifest what we desire.

I can relate to and believe strongly in step #5 and I love the quote by CF. Haanel..

I believe that it is only through service to others and a genuine attitude and effort to be a go-giver and by paying it forward that we will activate the Law of Abundance and receive what we deserve in return..

Such a powerful topic and so very well covered. (Though next time I might suggest breaking it into multiple posts so people read the whole thing). Shaking off poverty consciousness and coming to understand the rightful place of the energy exchange known as currency in our lives can be incredibly challenging at times! Isn’t it amazing how deeply engrained that stuff can run and it feels like trying to drag it out of our bones when we first get started!

From a fundamental Christian background and the internal struggles with wealth accumulation.

Even the scripture about the talents Matthew 5:14-30 which I have hanging beside my dream board.

Also even wanting to help missionaries and provide for them as they do an awesome service for the world and what a better way to do it.

I have always seen the logic in making more and being able to help more but the way you vocalize it here really helps me and confirms somethings as well this for was a must read.

Matt, you have crammed so much into this excellent article that I must go back and read it again sometime.
Sorry if it was there and I missed it, but I would like to say a couple of things.
Firstly, I have been rich and I have been poor and I know which I preferred. I don’t mean very rich, just rich enough to window shop and choose what to buy without looking at the price tag.
Secondly, I do not think that money is the important thing that we should focus on, it is what we can do with that money. Some people will choose to spend it all the day they get it, others will save most of it for their future, others will give it to a charity.
It is up to them how they spend it but, I will add, that investing in other people will reap great rewards.

As I see it, there are two ways we make a choice here.

    1) Choose abundance or choose lack.
    2) Choose to bless others or choose wealth for selfish purposes.

Haanel, Hill and Wattles all encouraged sharing wealth, and all 5 steps you’ve outlined are with that in mind.

Need I say that I love your post? It’s well thought out and well presented.

I don’t know whey some people think it is not spiritual or not clean to have money. It is so wrong to think that way. We are better able to help others if we can also help ourselves. Money brings us nothing but more opportunities and it gives us more opportunity to help others. I really see it as the manifestation of value in the world. If we are putting out something of value into the world it will come back to us.

Great post, Matt! Napoleon Hill’s work has stood the test of time because it has been so valuable that people have kept coming to it for generations. I think that a balanced approach is definitely the best one for money. If we remember that it is a tool, we avoid making it an idol. I couldn’t agree with you more about points four and five, because what good is prosperity if we don’t have anyone to share it with?
